Newport Consulting Engineers (NCE) is a family-owned business specialising in structural engineering design for small to medium residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Founded by Matt and Sue Yourell, NCE has been providing expert engineering solutions since 2006.

NCE recognised the need for a professional human resources strategy to support its people and workplace culture in line with its strong family values. Additionally, NCE wanted to ensure compliance with employer and workplace safety obligations while fostering a positive and engaged workforce.

Solution

Harrisons was engaged to manage NCE’s HR function, including developing a HR Plan and providing hands-on support with an on-site Human Resources Manager embedded within the business for two days per week.

Key areas of focus included:

  • Understanding the Business & HR Needs – Conducting an in-depth HR Health Check to gain insight into the business, its goals, and HR management requirements.
  • Employee Engagement – Facilitating an organisation-wide Engagement Survey, presenting results, and conducting workshops to develop targeted action plans for improvement. Coordinating the implementation of engagement initiatives.
  • Business Strategy – facilitating a workshop to assist the Directors with business strategy development
  • HR Strategy Development – Creating a 12-month HR Plan aligned with business objectives and people management priorities.
  • Compliance & Remuneration – Conducting an award and pay audit and reviewing employment contracts to ensure compliance with workplace legislation.
  • Leadership & Team Development – Facilitating off-site management meetings and “One Team” sessions focused on team cohesion, DISC profiling, and leadership alignment.
  • Performance Management – Advising, and coaching managers on effective employee performance management, including providing feedback, guidance, and ensuring award compliance.
  • HR & WHS Policies – Reviewing and updating HR and Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) policies and procedures to reflect best practices and legal requirements.
  • Talent Acquisition & Onboarding – Coordinating recruitment, enhancing induction, and onboarding processes while coaching managers to enhance hiring and retention practices.
  • Workplace Well-being – Assessing existing policies and procedures and providing recommendations, including sourcing and implementing an Employee Assistance Program to strengthen safety, compliance and workplace well-being.
