Refugee and Immigration Legal Services (RAILS) is a free service for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Queensland providing immigration, advice, legal assistance and legal education. RAILS is an independent not-for-profit organisation currently employing 42 staff in Brisbane.  

Due to ongoing business growth including a significant increase in funding in 2025, RAILS identified the need for professional HR management advice and support and were seeking HR expertise to assist with the review, development and management of your HR practices to comply with legislation, manage and motivate your employees and support the growth of your organisation.  

Solution

Harrisons were engaged to conduct a thorough Discovery phase, including a full HR Health Check and Employee Engagement Survey to understand RAILS’ new structure, culture and workforce needs. 

Partnering with RAILS, we developed a tailored HR Plan that prioritised risks and opportunities unique to the organisation and aligned directly with the organisation’s goals.   

Implementation was practical and comprehensive and included: 

  • ensuring compliance by conducting an award and pay audit and reviewing and updating HR policies; 
  • designing and training managers on the new performance and development framework;  
  • providing leadership coaching in legislative updates; and 
  • recruitment & selection and performance management.
